It is a necessary requirement for your dog or cat to be checked over and referred by your vet before any behaviour modification takes place, as any underlying health conditions, need to be ruled out first. My background as a qualified veterinary nurse means that I am fully aware of the importance of this collaboration and will work alongside your vet to ensure the best approach is used for your dog or cat.

Behaviour consultations usually take place in your home and last for approximately 2 hours. During the session we will discuss your pet’s history and I will make assessments of their individual needs, mood state, emotions which are driving problem behaviours and identify what their motivations are. An equally important part of the process is to find out what is reinforcing their behaviour and identifying how this can be changed, to teach a more appropriate behaviour where possible. I will evaluate your animal’s daily routine and diet to see if any improvements can be made to help your dog or cat. From here, we will develop a realistic, achievable plan together, which you will be fully supported to implement, with follow up sessions and advice as needed. A written report will be sent to you and your vet.

One: One training sessions (for puppies and adult dogs) usually last an hour and can be carried out at home, or in an outdoor setting if safe and appropriate. One to one training is suitable for problems such as training appropriate behaviour when greeting people, walking on the lead, recall, settle in a café, basic obedience etc., I offer training for cats as well as dogs (in the safety of your home).

Training walks are an option for people with vaccinated, sociable dogs, who would like to meet other dogs and their owners and carry out some informal training at the same time. The walks take place in different locations and last approximately an hour. Places must be booked in advance (no more than 6 dogs in a group).

£15 per dog/handler

Cat Training: One to one training is also offered for cats and kittens (in the safety of your home). This can be useful if you want to build a better relationship with your cat or to teach them fun/useful behaviours such as High Five, Spin, Up (to jump up onto a surface) or Off (jump down from a surface), Sit, Down and target training. These sessions can include general advice on cat care to ensure that their behavioural needs are being met.

Puppies are my passion! They are like sponges and learn so fast (even the things you don’t want them to). Because they are always learning (not just during training sessions), it is really important to get into good habits as soon as possible. This way many problem behaviours can be prevented.

I offer training sessions for puppies at home, beginning a few days after they have settled in. We can prepare them for life as a family dog and begin training important foundation behaviours such as recall, walking on a lead in the garden, how to settle, crate training, appropriate play, etc., This is also a great time to support you through the challenges of puppy biting and toilet training and teaching a puppy to be left alone, to prevent separation issues from developing. Once your puppy is fully vaccinated, we can begin training out on walks on lead, building up to off lead walking and coming when called (in a safe environment), meeting other dogs appropriately, greeting people and building confidence at the puppy’s pace with traffic and every day sights and sounds.

I believe this type of training is more effective than training a puppy in a traditional class environment, which is often over stimulating and too distracting for puppies to be able to learn optimally.

It is really important to choose the right puppy for you and your circumstances. Often people can be swayed by the look of a certain breed, without really thinking about the original purpose of the breed. This lack of understanding can result in the needs of the dog being unable to be met and behaviour problems developing later down the line. Another common problem, is sourcing puppies from breeders who have not carried out relevant health screening and/or have not correctly socialised puppies, which can have a lasting impact on their behaviour even into adulthood.

For this reason, I offer Pre-Puppy Purchase Consultations, to help you decide on a suitable breed and also find a reputable breeder. This can be carried out at home, where I can help you to prepare a safe environment for your puppy’s arrival, or via phone/video call.
